Before You Plunge... Read This!
Skip the Plunger. Save Your Plumbing!
When a toilet clogs, most homeowners automatically reach for a plunger. It seems like the quickest and easiest way to get things moving again.
But before you plunge, Stroud Superior Plumbing wants you to know what can happen when you use a plunger instead of a Toilet Auger.
Plunging can cause far more expensive damage then just a minor clog!
Repeated or aggressive plunging creates pressure in the plumbing system. If there is already a weakened pipe, damaged fitting, compromised connection, or another underlying problem, that added pressure could make the situation a lot worse.
What started as a relatively minor clog could potentially lead to a much more complicated and expensive underground plumbing repair.
A Toilet Auger would be a Better Choice
For a simple toilet clog, Stroud Superior Plumbing recommends using a toilet auger, also commonly called a toilet snake, rather than repeatedly plunging the toilet.
A toilet auger is specifically designed to travel through the toilet’s trap and reach a blockage without relying on the repeated suction pressure created by plunging.
However, if the toilet won’t clear, continues to clog, or other drains in the home are backing up too, stop and call Stroud Superior Plumbing at 210-600-9900. Those can be signs that the problem is farther down the plumbing system.
Also, Please, Don’t Plunge Your Sinks either!
Here’s another important tip from Stroud Superior Plumbing:
Never use a plunger to unclog a sink.
Underneath your sink are drain pipes, fittings, seals and glued connections. The suction pressure created by plunging can put unnecessary stress on those connections, particularly if the plumbing is older, weakened, improperly installed, or already compromised.
You don’t want a clogged sink to turn into a separated or leaking drain connection inside a cabinet, wall, or another difficult-to-reach area.
For a sink that isn’t draining properly, the blockage may be in the stopper, P-trap or farther down the drain line. The proper solution depends on where the clog is located, in these situations we recommend calling Stroud Superior Plumbing.
A Minor Repair Is Better Than a Major One
When a toilet or sink won’t drain, sometimes the best way to save money is knowing when to stop and ask for help.
We’d much rather have you call Stroud Superior Plumbing to diagnose and take care of a minor plumbing repair than have you call us later for a potentially much more expensive repair after additional damage has occurred.
So remember this month’s tip:
Before you plunge… think about what’s happening beyond the fixture. A quick call today could help prevent a much bigger plumbing problem tomorrow.
