Before You Plunge

Skip the Plunger. Save Your Plumbing!

When a toilet clogs, most homeowners automatically reach for a plunger. It seems like the quickest and easiest way to get things moving again.

But before you plunge, Stroud Superior Plumbing wants you to know what can happen when you use a plunger instead of a Toilet Auger.

Plunging can cause far more expensive damage then just a minor clog!

Repeated or aggressive plunging creates pressure in the plumbing system. If there is already a weakened pipe, damaged fitting, compromised connection, or another underlying problem, that added pressure could make the situation a lot worse.

What started as a relatively minor clog could potentially lead to a much more complicated and expensive underground plumbing repair.

A Toilet Auger would be a Better Choice

For a simple toilet clog, Stroud Superior Plumbing recommends using a toilet auger, also commonly called a toilet snake, rather than repeatedly plunging the toilet.

A toilet auger is specifically designed to travel through the toilet’s trap and reach a blockage without relying on the repeated suction pressure created by plunging.

However, if the toilet won’t clear, continues to clog, or other drains in the home are backing up too, stop and call Stroud Superior Plumbing at 210-600-9900. Those can be signs that the problem is farther down the plumbing system.

Also, Please, Don’t Plunge Your Sinks either!

Here’s another important tip from Stroud Superior Plumbing:

Never use a plunger to unclog a sink.

Underneath your sink are drain pipes, fittings, seals and glued connections. The suction pressure created by plunging can put unnecessary stress on those connections, particularly if the plumbing is older, weakened, improperly installed, or already compromised.

You don’t want a clogged sink to turn into a separated or leaking drain connection inside a cabinet, wall, or another difficult-to-reach area.

For a sink that isn’t draining properly, the blockage may be in the stopper, P-trap or farther down the drain line. The proper solution depends on where the clog is located, in these situations we recommend calling Stroud Superior Plumbing.

A Minor Repair Is Better Than a Major One

When a toilet or sink won’t drain, sometimes the best way to save money is knowing when to stop and ask for help.

We’d much rather have you call Stroud Superior Plumbing to diagnose and take care of a minor plumbing repair than have you call us later for a potentially much more expensive repair after additional damage has occurred.

So remember this month’s tip:

Before you plunge… think about what’s happening beyond the fixture. A quick call today could help prevent a much bigger plumbing problem tomorrow.

Can’t Go Tankless?

Can’t Go Tankless?

San Antonio

Can't Go Tankless? Meet the Next Best Thing!

Essency E55R SSP 01

Many homeowners love the idea of upgrading to a tankless water heater: longer-lasting hot water, great performance, and modern technology. But sometimes a traditional tankless system simply isn’t the right fit for a home.

That’s where the Essency On-Demand Electric Water Heater offers a very interesting alternative.

A Tank Water Heater That Thinks Differently

The Essency isn’t a traditional electric tank water heater, and it isn’t a conventional tankless unit either. It combines a 55-gallon polymer storage tank with an internal heat exchanger and on-demand system that heats domestic water as it is being used.

That design allows it to deliver some of the performance homeowners associate with tankless systems while operating as an electric water heater.

Lots of Hot Water When Your Family Needs It

One of the standout features is its hot-water performance. The Essency E55R has an 80-gallon First Hour Rating, despite having a 55-gallon tank. Ferguson also states that its oversized heat exchanger provides performance comparable to a standard 199,900-BTU tankless system.

For a household where showers, laundry, dishes, and everyday life can put serious demands on the water heater, that additional hot-water capability can make a noticeable difference.

No Steel Tank Means No Rust or Corrosion

Here’s another feature we really like: the tank itself is made from polymer rather than traditional steel.

According to the manufacturer information provided by Ferguson, that means no tank corrosion or rust, no scale formation on the tank, and no anode rod to maintain. The unit also uses thermally fused titanium heating elements.

Essency states an expected life of 30+ years, which is particularly noteworthy for a water heater.

Smart Technology and Consistent Hot Water

The Essency also brings modern technology into the utility room. It includes Wi-Fi connectivity and is designed to maintain a stable, accurate outlet temperature.

The system continuously manages water movement through its internal heat exchanger, helping deliver hot water at the selected temperature rather than relying solely on the way a conventional storage water heater operates.

An Alternative Worth Considering

Every home is different, and no single type of water heater is right for everyone. But if you’ve wanted the performance and benefits associated with tankless hot water and thought your home couldn’t accommodate it, don’t assume a conventional tank water heater is your only choice.

The Essency On-Demand Electric Water Heater gives homeowners another option worth exploring.

Stroud Superior Plumbing can evaluate your home’s plumbing and hot-water needs and help determine whether an Essency On-Demand Electric Water Heater is a good fit for your household.

Water Heater Flushes

Water Heater Flushes

San Antonio

Why Water Heater Flushes Matter

Article 02 Water Heater Flush

A Little Preventive Maintenance Can Help Keep Your Hot Water Flowing

Your water heater works hard every day, providing hot water for showers, laundry, dishes, cleaning and everything in between. But there’s something happening inside a traditional tank-style water heater that homeowners may not see: sediment and mineral deposits can gradually collect at the bottom of the tank.

Over time, that buildup can affect how efficiently and effectively your water heater operates. Routine flushing is an important part of maintaining a traditional tank-style water heater and can help remove accumulated sediment before it contributes to performance problems.

What Builds Up Inside a Water Heater?

Minerals and other particles naturally present in the water supply can settle at the bottom of a water heater tank. In areas with hard water, mineral accumulation can happen more quickly.

As that sediment layer grows, it can interfere with heat transfer and make the water heater work harder to heat the water inside the tank.

Benefits of Routine Water Heater Flushing

Having your standard tank-style water heater flushed as part of regular maintenance can provide several benefits:

Helps Remove Sediment & Mineral Buildup
Flushing helps clear accumulated sediment from the bottom of the tank before it becomes a larger problem.

Supports Efficient Operation
Sediment can create a barrier between the heating source and the water. Removing buildup can help the system transfer heat more efficiently.

May Reduce Popping & Rumbling Noises
Have you ever heard strange popping or rumbling sounds coming from a water heater? Sediment buildup is a common cause of these noises in tank-style units.

Helps Maintain Consistent Performance
Keeping sediment under control can help your water heater continue doing its job efficiently and reliably.

Helps Protect Your Investment
Routine maintenance can reduce unnecessary strain on water-heater components and may help extend the useful life of the system.

How Often Should a Water Heater Be Flushed?

A common recommendation for traditional tank-style water heaters is about once per year, although the appropriate schedule depends on the water heater, water quality and household usage.

Homes with hard water or heavier mineral content may benefit from more frequent maintenance. Always follow the maintenance recommendations for your particular water heater.

What About Tankless Water Heaters?

Tankless systems have different maintenance requirements because they don’t store water in a traditional tank.

Mineral scale can still accumulate inside a tankless system, but these units typically require descaling or manufacturer-specified maintenance rather than the traditional tank flush described in this article.

Don’t Wait for a Problem to Think About Your Water Heater

Preventive plumbing maintenance isn’t just about fixing something that’s already broken. It’s also an opportunity to keep an eye on the systems your household depends on every day.

Unusual noises, cloudy or discolored hot water, longer recovery times or running out of hot water sooner than usual can all be signs that your water heater may need attention.

If you aren’t sure when your water heater was last serviced, Stroud Superior Plumbing can help.

Keep the Hot Water Flowing

Whether you need routine water heater maintenance, you’re experiencing a problem with your current system, or you’re considering a new water heater, the experienced team at Stroud Superior Plumbing is ready to help.

Tunnel & Trenching

Tunnel and Trenching: Experience Matters

Article 03 Sept Tunnel n Trenching SSP

Specialized Solutions for Complex Underground Plumbing Repairs

Some plumbing problems are easy to reach. Others are hidden underground or beneath your home’s foundation, where getting to the damaged plumbing can be just as important as making the repair itself.

When underground water or sewer lines need repair or replacement, trenching or tunneling may be necessary to safely access the affected plumbing. These are specialized jobs that require proper diagnosis, careful planning and an experienced plumbing team.

What Is Trenching?

Trenching involves carefully excavating a section of the ground to access underground plumbing lines. It may be necessary when repairing or replacing damaged water lines, sewer lines or other buried plumbing.

The goal isn’t simply to dig until the pipe is found. An experienced plumber first determines where the problem is located and the best way to access it, helping to minimize unnecessary excavation and disruption to your property.

What Is Plumbing Tunneling?

When damaged plumbing is located beneath a home’s foundation, tunneling may sometimes provide access to the affected area from underneath the foundation rather than through the interior of the home.

This type of work requires experience and careful planning. The location of the plumbing, foundation, soil conditions and extent of the repair all need to be considered when determining the appropriate approach.

Why Choosing the Right Plumber Matters

Tunnel and trench repairs are not ordinary plumbing jobs. An incorrect diagnosis or poorly planned excavation can mean unnecessary digging, additional expense and more disruption to your property.

That’s why it is important to work with a plumbing company experienced in complex underground repairs.

At Stroud Superior Plumbing, our highly trained team takes the time to identify the source of the problem and determine the appropriate repair method before the work begins.

Our goal is to:

  • Accurately locate and diagnose the plumbing problem
  • Avoid unnecessary excavation whenever possible
  • Determine the safest and most appropriate access method
  • Protect your home and property throughout the project
  • Complete the plumbing repair correctly and professionally

Start With the Right Diagnosis

Not every underground plumbing problem requires extensive excavation. The first step should always be determining what is actually wrong and where the problem is located.

If you’re experiencing recurring sewer problems, unexplained water loss, signs of an underground leak or a plumbing issue that may be beneath your foundation, having the problem properly evaluated can help determine the next step.

Stroud Superior Plumbing has the experience and training to handle complex plumbing repairs, including tunnel and trench work, with the care your home deserves.

August Special – Sewer Camera Inspections

August Special – Sewer Camera Inspections

San Antonio

Special $75.00 Sewer Camera Inspections

August Special $75 Sewer Camera Inspections

Discover Hidden Plumbing Problems Before They Become Costly Repairs

Many plumbing issues begin where you can’t see them. Underground sewer lines can develop cracks, become blocked by tree roots, shift over time, or simply wear out with age. Unfortunately, these problems often remain hidden until they become major repairs.

That’s where a professional sewer camera inspection can make all the difference.

At Stroud Superior Plumbing, we use advanced sewer camera technology to inspect the inside of your drain and sewer lines without unnecessary digging or guesswork. Our experienced technicians can quickly identify the source of the problem, allowing you to make informed decisions before minor issues become costly emergencies.

What Is a Sewer Camera Inspection?

A sewer camera inspection uses a waterproof, high-definition camera attached to a flexible cable that travels through your plumbing system. As the camera moves through your pipes, it provides a live video feed that allows our technicians to see exactly what’s happening underground.

Instead of relying on assumptions, we can accurately locate problems such as:

  • Tree root intrusion
  • Pipe corrosion
  • Cracked or collapsed sewer lines
  • Grease and debris buildup
  • Pipe misalignment or shifting
  • Foreign objects causing blockages

This technology eliminates much of the guesswork involved in diagnosing plumbing issues, helping homeowners save both time and money.

Signs You May Need a Sewer Camera Inspection

Many homeowners don’t realize they have an underground plumbing problem until it’s too late. If you’ve noticed any of the following warning signs, a sewer camera inspection may be the next best step:

  • Slow drains throughout your home
  • Frequent drain clogs
  • Sewage odors inside or outside your home
  • Gurgling sounds coming from drains or toilets
  • Water backing up into tubs or showers
  • Recurring plumbing problems that never seem completely resolved

Even if your plumbing appears to be working normally, an inspection can provide valuable peace of mind, especially if your home is older or you’ve experienced plumbing issues in the past.

Why Early Detection Matters

Finding plumbing problems early is almost always less expensive than waiting for an emergency.

A sewer camera inspection can identify developing issues before they lead to major pipe failures, water damage, landscape excavation, or costly sewer line replacements. Knowing exactly what condition your pipes are in allows you to plan repairs instead of reacting to unexpected emergencies.

Early detection also helps eliminate unnecessary repairs. Because we can see the exact cause and location of the problem, we recommend only the work that’s actually needed.

August Special: Only $75

For a limited time, Stroud Superior Plumbing is offering professional sewer camera inspections for just $75.

Whether you’re experiencing recurring plumbing issues or simply want the confidence of knowing your sewer line is in good condition, this special makes it affordable to get professional answers before problems become more serious.

Non-Invasive Diagnosis

In the past, diagnosing sewer line problems often required disruptive excavation. Plumbers had to dig up yards or floors to locate blockages or damage, which was both expensive and time-consuming. Sewer camera inspections remove the need for guesswork and invasive procedures. By visually inspecting the inside of the pipes, technicians can diagnose issues without disturbing landscaping, concrete, or flooring—saving time, labor, and cost.

Comprehensive Problem Identification

A sewer camera inspection can uncover a wide range of issues, from simple clogs and debris buildup to more serious problems like tree root intrusion, pipe corrosion, collapsed sections, or misaligned joints. Identifying these issues early prevents them from escalating into major repairs or property damage. It’s a proactive step that allows for informed decision-making and timely maintenance.
